What actually are Megaways slots

Keep seeing Megaways mentioned everywhere but never fully understood what makes them different from a regular slot. Is it just a mechanic or is it a whole category? And is it worth specifically looking for them or does it not really matter?

Megaways is a mechanic licensed by Big Time Gaming. Basically the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin so the number of ways to win changes too. Can go from a few hundred up to 117649 ways on a 6 reel game.
