How do I know if a casino is licensed and trustworthy

Got burned recently by a site that looked legitimate and turned out not to be. Not going into the full story but it's made me realise I don't actually know how to properly vet a casino before signing up. I've been playing for a while but always just went with what looked decent. What do you actually check before you trust a site to deposit at?
 
First thing I always check is the licence badge at the bottom of the site. But don't just look at it, click it. If it takes you to a live regulator page with the casino name and company details matching what's on the site you're in decent shape. If it opens a PDF or an image file that's a red flag straight away.
 
MGA and UKGC are the two I trust most. Curacao is everywhere but the oversight is much weaker so I treat it as a lower tier. Not a dealbreaker but I'm more careful with those sites.
 
AskGamblers directory is my first stop honestly. if the casino isn't listed there i don't sign up, simple as that. their team has already done the background check so you don't have to
