There is a very simple and clear reason why online European Roulette is preferred by most players in comparison to the American roulette: the house edge is just 2.7%, which makes it about half of the house advantage in American roulette, which stands at 5.26%. So, by default, when you play European roulette online you get better odds than you would by playing other types of roulette which means that your chances of winning go up.
While most types of roulette are pretty similar, there are several differences you will notice if you try all versions, and we’re here to let you know exactly what the differences between European Roulette play and American or French roulette are, how to play free European roulette, what the most trusted strategies are and what bets you can make to help increase that bankroll. So stay tuned for all the information you need and a short but complete guide to become a better European roulette player!
How to Play a European Roulette Game
Free European roulette is a pretty simple game to play even though it might seem a little daunting at first. There’s a table with a wheel and a ball, you place bets, the ball spins on the wheel and if it lands on the numbers you’ve bet on then you win.
The European roulette game wheel layout is the standard one with 37 pockets and a 0, while, in contrast, the American version has 38 slots and an extra 0 one. While it might not seem like a big difference, that extra 9 slot is the one that determines the house edge and raises it for the US version.
But before we get into how everything works, what to play and how to bet, you should make sure that you do two things:
- Practice and play European roulette online for fun in the free demo versions before trying European roulette online for real money
- When you’re ready for the real version, make sure you pick some good roulette sites.
European roulette play free online is the way to go because when you’re playing for free you have 0 risks and can, therefore, make sure you understand the rules fully and find the betting strategies that work for you. There will be no unpleasant surprises when you take things to the next level and play for real because you know what to expect and have picked the game that you like most and feel that works for your gambling style.
Remember that free European roulette has exactly the same rules as its real-money counterpart which means that if you master this version, you master them all. We have an impressive selection of online European roulette games that you can try to hone your skills.
Now, let’s carry on. There are two types of bets you can make on European roulette online: outside and inside bets. The outside bets are called this because they are literally outside the numbers drawn on the betting table, while the inside bets are the ones inside the table of numbers on which in land-based casinos players place their chips.
The outside bets are on red or black, even or odd or one of the six divisions of numbers (1-12, 12-24, 25-36 and three columns). These allow you to cover more ground and increase your odds of winnings because, obviously, chances are that it’s easier to get a colour right instead of just a single number out of all 37.
While the inside bets have lower odds of winning, they will consequently have bigger payouts. You can bet on a straight (single number), split (two numbers), three line (three numbers), corner/square (four numbers that form a square) or six line (two sets of three or two streets). The straight has the highest payout, paying 35 to 1, while most outside bets will pay 1 to 1 or at most 2 to 1, but more on that later on.
Rules, Bets and Payouts for European Roulette Online
European roulette online offers several betting possibilities. As discussed before, they are mainly divided into outside and inside bets, with each category having a series of possible choices. Here are the bets you can make, as well as the expected payouts for when you’re ready to play European roulette online real money.
For inside bets we have:
- Straight Bet – This one is placed on a single number, including on 0. You can pick any of the 37 numbers. The payout is 35 to 1.
- Split Bet – This bet is placed on two adjacent numbers. So you can choose 0 and 1 (or 2 or 3), but also on any of the other adjacent numbers. The payout is 17 to 1.
- Street Bet – Here you bet on three numbers in a row like 0, 1 and 2 or 0, 2 and 3, for example. The payout is 11 to 1.
- Corner Bet – Here you have four numbers on a corner where they touch like 0, 1, 2 and 3, for example. Payout is 8 to 1.
- Line Bet – Bet on six numbers or two rows of three numbers, placed at the end of two rows. Payout is 5 to 1.
For outside bets we have:
- Column Bet – this one is on an entire column and has a payout of 2 to 1.
- Dozen Bet – You bet on a group of 12 numbers there are three dozens available, from 1 to 12, from 13 to 24 and from 25 to 36. The payout is 2 to 1.
- Colour – You can bet on either all the red numbers or all the black numbers. Payout is 1 to 1.
- Odd/Even – Here you bet on either all the odd numbers or all the even numbers. Payout is 1 to 1.
- Low/High – You can either bet on low numbers (1 to 18) or on high numbers (19 to 36). Payout is 1 to 1.
If you bet on even-money outside bets like red/black, even/odd or low/high and the ball lands on 0, you can use the “en prison” rule. You will get 50% of your bet or the entire bet will be imprisoned. If the imprisoned bet is a winner on the next wheel spin, then it will be released and you will get it back. If the ball lands on zero on the next spin, then depending on where you are playing the game there can be different variations.
European Roulette Free Online Betting Strategy
You can’t modify the outcome of a spin in any way and it’s completely random so the way to go would be to spread your bets and stay on the safe side of things. A good proportion of low-risk bets and higher risk bets is one of the ways to go. While inside bets have better rewards, it’s the outside bets that give you better chances of winning and ensure that you will be playing for a longer time and having more fun.
There are several roulette betting systems you can try like Martingale or Paroli which affect the way you react when losing or winning a round, but none of them is guaranteed to work.
The only thing that works all the time is common sense and good bankroll management. Playing responsibly is key and if you pick a trusted online casino site, a good game and stick to smart playing then you will have no issues whatsoever.
It’s important that you set aside a special fund for entertainment that is completely separate from the funds you need for necessity and vital things. And it’s even more important that you stick to it and don’t go over it no matter what happens. Win or lose, you should stick to your budget and make smart choices.
Also, remember that online gambling shouldn’t be your only form of entertainment and you must spend quality time with friends and family and not let this past time affect your social life.
Furthermore, make sure that you think about the bet limits and bet within your means. It’s much better and much more fun to play with small bets over a longer period of time then to make two big bets and that’s it. Plus, this way probability is in your favour and you’re more likely to actually win.
Last but not least, even though you might want to play American roulette as well as European Roulette, remember that the odds are higher in European roulette so this is the version you should try for real money, while the American one is more suited to free play.
